WHAT IS THE GROWTH POTENTIAL OF THE TEA AND COFFEE MARKET RIGHT NOW?

In 2014, the value of the U.S. RTD tea market was estimated at $5.23 billion, and growth is predicted at 3% to 6% through 2018. The trend is expected to continue and grow as health conscious consumers trend toward more natural and lower calorie alternatives to soft drinks. WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS AND CHANGES IN TEA?

Consumers have been opting to eliminate soft drinks to improve their diets, but they still want refreshment and taste satisfaction. Since they perceive coffee and especially, tea-based beverages as natural and healthy, both market segments have been growing steadily as consumers make the switch. People connect tea with the words antioxidants, hydration, and replenishment.

WHAT NEW, UNIQUE TEA AND COFFEE VARIATIONS ARE GAINING ATTENTION?

Robust iced coffees made from real brewed coffee and natural flavors are being introduced more and more in recent months. In tea, rooibos or “red tea” is gaining in exposure and demand, with a great taste, unique color, and abundant perceived health benefits. Finally, the classic “brewed tea” label claim will always be on trend; for the best results when creating a bottled tea, it’s essential to start with Amelia Bay brewed tea.

WHAT CONTRIBUTES TO TEA AND COFFEE FLAVOR PROFILE?

Both tea and coffee cultivation are heavily affected by their growing region, where temperatures, soil nutrients, plant age and strain all contribute to subtle differences. All tea comes from one type of plant, Camellia Sinensis, which is dried to make green tea, and then fermented to make black tea. Very simply put, the processing of the leaf is what changes tea into various types. Coffee, like tea, is affected by growing region; however, the different types also get their specific characteristics depending on the roast: light, medium, medium-dark, or dark roast.

WHAT IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND TEA AND COFFEE'S “SUPERFOOD” STATUS?

Tea and coffee both contain natural antioxidants, so you do not need to add additional ingredients to them to make them functional. In tea, this functionality comes from polyphenols and catechins, and in coffee, from components like cholrogenic acid.

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE READY TO LEVERAGE TEA AND COFFEE'S HEALTH BENEFITS?

Amelia Bay's brewed tea and coffees are being used in everything from sports drinks to energy drinks to RTD beverages with a healthy spin to them. If the label says “brewed” tea or coffee, there is a good chance it’s from us.

WHY SHOULD DAIRY PROCESSORS PAY ATTENTION TO TEA AND COFFEE?

Tea and coffee are relevant as stand-alone beverages and potential dairy ingredients. Tea is the second-most consumed beverage on the planet after water and market research shows that the RTD Tea segment will continue to grow over the next five years. In many cases, dairies could use their existing equipment to make more money and gain higher margins on iced tea than on milk alone. Amelia Bay can help dairies launch their own private label tea programs or reformulate current programs using brewed extracts to take advantage of this growing market.

DO PROCESSING AND PASTEURIZATION AFFECT AMELIA BAY TEA AND COFFEE?

Amelia Bay's brewed liquid tea and coffee extracts are optimized for ease of use and stability and can be used with hot or cold fill processes. Our brewed extracts are in pure liquid form, blending much easier than instant tea powders and resulting in faster batching and clean-up times.
